5/26/2023 0 Comments Baby, I got Issues -- Or 12, Actually: Semester Outfit Recap for a Student JournalistHow does a journalist dress? Outside of pharmacy school, my other major chunk of time is spent working on my university's ~award-winning~ student newspaper; I've held an editorial position for the past 2 years, and I'll be an editor again for this coming school year. For the duration of the spring 2023 semester, I had been documenting my outfit every publishing night (AKA pub night) since the beginning of the semester, and I made an Instagram Reel recapping said outfits. In episode 100 of the Style and Direction podcast hosted by Ethan M. Wong and Spencer Otte, the two discussed Spencer's "journalist style" and how it reflects his career. For me, I don't think my pub night fits really show that; if anything, in my role as a student journalist, my style embodies more of the "student" (in terms of my love for the academia aesthetic) and less of the "journalist." However, I still thought it'd be fun to go through what pub night entails and each night’s outfit in more detail! For every issue, I included the date, a very brief overview of the fit, the outfit details, and then any musings to go along with the overall styling of the outfit or the individual pieces. As this is a *very* long post, feel free to just scroll through the pictures and cherrypick whichever ones you find most interesting! As a little note: I erroneously mislabeled each issue number in the Reel, and I didn't notice it until after I already posted it. As this was the second semester of the school year, we published issues 13-24, NOT issues 1-12. To keep it consistent and make it easier to refer back to the Reel, I still used 1-12 in this post. Just know that for the record I am a fool and to +12 to each one. If you haven’t already, watch the Instagram Reel first! What Do You Need on Pub Night?Pub night is once a week, 12 times a semester (for our 12 issues per semester). It starts at 7 PM and lasts anywhere from 1 AM to 4 AM. There is a LOT of sitting at your computer; we finish any last-minute writing, do lots and lots of editing, and post the articles online. We also usually make a fun behind-the-scenes TikTok/IG Reel, a Starbucks run, and a myriad of silly goofy jokes. In terms of what I require from a practical standpoint, my pub night outfits need to be:
Some things that weren’t factors for me to consider, at least consciously:
Issue 1: January 17 (Storybook)White ribbed turtleneck: secondhand via my mom's closet, probably from the 2000s Ribbed oatmeal shrug: local boutique Green maxi dress: Rebecca Taylor liquidation sale Green pendant necklace: Ana Luisa Temple Green set Spectator Louis heel Oxfords: secondhand Bettie Page Patricia heels via eBay I got this green dress during winter break, just a few weeks prior to the start of the semester, so this was my first time wearing it. During vacation, my mom and I went to a Rebecca Taylor store at the mall that was liquidating all of its merchandise (its parent company had decided to shut down the brand back in September). Because of the liquidation sale, we -- as in my mom lol -- was able to buy the dress, originally priced at $365, for only $52. I really liked the celery green color and the almost 70s cottagecore, storybook-lite vibe, especially with the gathered bust. I have an absolute myriad of fitted turtlenecks that I layer underneath 99% of my outfits from fall to spring, but this white one is a new addition to the rotation from this past summer. I had only worn this one once or twice before, so I felt like it was its time to shine. The oatmeal shrug was a 2022 purchase, and it has been so incredibly useful as a chronically cold person. Because it's cropped and a warm-toned neutral, I can throw it on top of most outfits, and it'll look cohesive. The Louis heel Oxfords went with the storybook vibe, but unfortunately, this was the last time I'm ever wearing them. I bought them 2 years ago, and at the time, I was going through a bit of an identity crisis when it came to my shoe size. Ultimately, I ended up buying them a size too small, and it was only this day that I finally came to terms with the fact that they are simply never going to be comfortable unless I pull a Cinderella stepsister-style DIY surgery. While they are absolutely gorgeous, they make my feet scream in agony within 15-30 minutes of wearing them. (I'm actually selling them on my Poshmark/Depop, so DM me on Instagram if you're interested lol) Issue 2: January 24 (Summer Dress in Winter)Potato screenshot from the Reel Black turtleneck: Kotn Midi shirt dress: Collectif Caterina swing dress Sheer black tights: old cheapies Heeled lace-up black faux suede boots: Steve Madden Another turtleneck as my base layer? Groundbreaking. I have 4 fitted turtlenecks specifically from Kotn that I would simply pass away from frostbite if I were without them. I had only ever worn this Collectif shirtdress in the summer, so I was in the mood to style it again for the winter. To make it warm enough for chilly bones, I piled on even more layers underneath the turtleneck: a slip dress, a base layer long-sleeve, tights, and socks on top of the tights. As global warming has thawed Midwestern winters through the years, these boots are now my "winter boots;" with the decent tread, I have actually worn them while it's snowing heavily, and they're also pretty warm. Plus, the low heel elevates them (literally haha) enough to go with the dressier vibes of the dress. Issue 3: January 31 (Style Uniform)Potato quality screenshot from the Reel Beige turtleneck: Kotn Oversized brown sweater: American Eagle Pleated wide leg black corduroy pants: secondhand 90s vintage via my dad's closet Heeled lace-up faux suede black boots: Steve Madden (same as issue 2) And yet another turtleneck base layer! Turtleneck + oversized sweater + wide leg corduroy pants is my quintessential style uniform during the bulk of the year, so this was a very easy outfit to put together. This particular sweater was a 2022 purchase (and purchased because I know my style uniform and wanted another color option in the rotation). It's not my go-to when I execute this particular outfit formula, so it felt like it was time to wear it. It made this outfit a little different from my typical style uniform, albeit a very small difference really only perceptible to me. Same with the shoes -- I usually wear sneakers with my style uniform, so heeled boots made it a little more interesting! I know "oOh BrOwN aNd BlAcK" is supposed to be this big taboo in fashion, but I literally do not care. I wear brown and black together all the time. It's an incredibly silly and outdated "rule," and I rarely see any fashion people (at least those who care about fashion beyond what's conventionally flattering) *actually* subscribe to it. Issue 4: February 7 (Rugby Shirt Sorrows)Screenshot from the Reel Pale apricot ribbed mock neck: Asos Fake pearl necklace: Francesca’s Rugby shirt: secondhand Ralph Lauren via my mom's closet Faded black wide leg jeans: boutique in China Black leather belt: Cool and Collected Vintage & Antiques in FL Lace-up black combat boots: Doc Marten 1460 boots This day was my first time ever going to a home basketball game at my basketball school (only took 3.5 years lol and living practically next door to the fieldhouse). I wanted to wear blue in honor of our school colors, but I'm such a warm-toned bitch that this rugby shirt was the only (sufficiently cute) blue item in my wardrobe. This was also my first time wearing it, and I had a bit of trouble styling it. With the structure and volume of the rugby shirt's collar on its own, my usual turtlenecks were too bulky to fit and look good at the neck, so this mock neck was a better choice as something that was less chonky. I tried pairing the rugby shirt with my usual light brown wide leg trousers, but they just looked so weird together. I didn't love the way it tucked in (it looked super clumpy through the trousers and was a weird length), and the color combo was just not it for me. I think there was also an element of incongruity in terms of formality since in my head trousers = formal, rugby shirt = casual. Usually I embrace the mixing of formality (I wear trousers with sneakers vast majority of the time), but something about this just wasn't working for me. I ultimately liked it with these jeans, which was the first time I wore denim in a *long* time since I'm just not really a denim person anymore. The denim holds more structure and is darker than the trousers, so it hid the bulk of the rugby shirt better. The casualness of jeans also felt better with the shirt. I chose the Docs for my shoes simply because I hadn't worn them in a while and knew they'd be comfortable enough to stand in for the duration of the basketball game, and I liked the edge of them to go with the black jeans. However, I added a (fake) pearl necklace to add back a touch of femininity and daintiness to an otherwise very masculine outfit. Issue 5: February 14 (Valentine's Day)Pale apricot ribbed mock neck: Asos (same as issue 4) Champagne silk button-up: secondhand White House Black Market via Depop Pink paisley dress: secondhand Free People via my mom's closet Lace fishnet tights: ModCloth Slip dress: secondhand 60s vintage via DirtyBirdiesVintage Burgundy Chelsea rain boots: Target When I was but a wee lad, I was definitely that eDgY bitch who was like "ew Valentine’s Day is a fake holiday made up by corporations," but as I've gotten older, I've grown to love Valentine's Day more and more. I have since become less of a hater and more of a lover <3. Most notably, I love the opportunity to dress up to a theme, so of COURSE I had to go pink for the day. This pink paisley dress is something I've only worn once before -- a summer wedding last year -- so both the color and the emotional connotation felt perfect for Valentine's Day. Other than (of course) layering a mock neck or turtleneck underneath, another one of my favorite tricks for wearing summer dresses in the colder months is to tie a button-up at the waist. With the V-neck of this dress peeking out, I love the combination of necklines and textures that this created: pastel orange-pink ribbed knit mock neck < crepe silk(?) rose pink V-neck dress < champagne silk satin with deeper V. And, from a distance, the top makes the dress look like a skirt, which is a fun way to restyle a one-piece. I layered a slip dress underneath the dress purely for practical temperature reasons, but I LOVE the way the trim peaked out at the hem. It just added even more romance to the outfit! Issue 6: February 21 (Style Uniform Again)Mustard turtleneck: Kotn Llama sweater: tourist store in Cusco, Peru Pleated wide leg black corduroy pants: secondhand 90s vintage via my dad's closet (same as issue 3) O-ring black faux leather belt: N*sty G*l (horrible terrible brand) Gum sole sneakers: secondhand Tory Burch via my mom This is my same style uniform/outfit formula as in issue 3 but just with (mostly) different pieces. I hadn't worn the llama sweater in a while, so I was in the mood to retrieve it from the collection. It's another example of why you don't need to shy away from wearing brown and black together! My mom bought these bougie sneakers for herself over winter break (same mall trip as issue 1's green dress). But they actually ended up being a little too small for her, so my mom offered to pass them down to me! I had been on the hunt for retro-ish sneakers (like the New Balance 574s) for over half a year at that point, so I was more than happy to accept them. Reflecting the colors of the sweater, the sneakers are white, beige, gray, and black. Again, as a warm-toned bitch, I don't really ever wear cool tones, but this particular gray is tolerable because it has warm undertones. However, I am considering dying the material (a suede) to dark brown to better match my style. Issue 7: February 28 (Monochrome black)The pub night version (left) vs. the original inspo (right, originally featured in my 2022 low buy finale post) Black ribbed turtleneck: Asos Black satin babydoll mini dress: local boutique Black plaid tights: Target Black T-strap brogued flats: BAIT Footwear Emma flats I wore this nearly identical, 90s-ish outfit back in December (right photo, saved in my old OOTD story highlights), and I hadn't worn the dress since, so I wanted to wear it. Although this is a monochrome outfit, I love the combination of texture: the ribbed knit of the turtleneck + polyester satin of the dress + mesh plaid of the tights + faux leather of the shoes. Especially when it comes to all-black fits where you only have minuscule differences between shades of black, combining materials/textures is a key component to adding interest. With the dress's very open neckline + open back, it's a perfect candidate to layer a turtleneck underneath. Additionally, the babydoll silhouette is really perfect for pub night because it's very comfortable at the waist. The shoes are the Emma flats from the BAIT Footwear Outlet; BAIT does vintage-inspired shoes, and their outlet Instagram account (@baitfootwear.superoutlet) has discounted overstock, floor samples, etc. These particular brogue T-straps were part of my first-ever order from the outlet (and from BAIT as a whole), so I was unfamiliar with the brand's sizing. I'm usually a US 6.5-7, but I foolishly believed I could get away with a size 6 as I was going through a shoe-sizing identity crisis at the time (same era as issue 1's heels). Unfortunately, they were EGREGIOUSLY too small for me. I spent a LOT of time shoving my wool-socked foot into these shoes and heating them up with a blow dryer in an attempt to stretch them out. While they're still too small, at least they're bearable now. With my BAIT sizing knowledge now, if I had the choice, I would go with a size 7 or even 7.5 for their flats. Issue 8: March 21 (Summer Dress for Early spring)Not pictured: brown oversized ribbed wool cardigan White ribbed turtleneck: secondhand via my mom's closet (same as issue 1) Floral puff sleeve midi dress: Nordstrom something, shared with my mother Brown midi cotton skirt: Target Heart mesh socks: D*lls K*ll (horrible nasty terrible brand) Black T-strap brogued flats: BAIT Footwear Emma flats (same as issue 7) Ribbed brown wool cardigan (not pictured): Uniqlo While I'm certainly no stranger to the turtleneck + summer dress combo, I hadn’t styled this specific dress in that cold-weather way until the beginning of March, despite keeping it in my closet since the summer for that very purpose. I liked the combo so much that I wanted to repeat it exactly! With the light floral print of the dress + white of the turtleneck, I liked how it maintained a springy color palette yet was still practical for the lingering Midwestern cold. Lately, I'd been exploring wearing dresses as tops by layering skirts on top to get more mileage out of them. The week prior, I had used that specific skirt with another long floral dress, so I was inspired to do the same thing again. While I didn't wear it in the picture, I brought my brown Uniqlo wool cardigan along with me to many a pub night. The only reason I remember having it this specific pub night was because I'm wearing it in the weekly TikTok. It's chunky and oversized (I sized up by 1 size), which makes it very easy to layer on top of anything or take it off when I'm no longer cold. Even though I wasn't necessarily wearing it a lot of the time, I still often brought it with me because my temperature regulation is so poor and knew that when I needed to wear it, I *really* needed it. Issue 9: March 28 (Style Uniform Once More)Black turtleneck: Kotn (same as issue 1) Ribbed cropped burgundy oversized sweater: old R*mwe Rust orange wide leg corduroy pants: secondhand Forever 21 via Depop Golden ochre velvet loafers: BAIT Footwear Fumiko loafer Yet another iteration of my style uniform! This specific burgundy sweater and pair of corduroy pants are 2 of the most-worn items in my entire wardrobe. It's funny because I got this sweater back in 11th grade, stopped wearing it after a bit, but then started wearing it constantly after I "rediscovered" it ~2 years ago. I love that it's cropped but still cinches in at the waist; it creates the defined waist silhouette that I always incorporate without me having to deal with tucking in a thicc sweater. These low-heeled loafers aren't an everyday choice for me, but I liked that they contributed to the warm-toned 70s lewk. I regret the sock choice here. Even during pub night, I was thinking about how I would've preferred a lighter-colored sock with these shoes. While I usually like a piece-by-piece gradient from top to bottom, I've realized this year that I don't like it when my socks are a notably darker/more saturated shade than my shoes; it makes me feel like my feet are chopped off from the rest of my legs. Issue 10: April 4 (Iftar + Miracle on Modcloth Street)Left: outfit #1 for iftar, right: outfit #2 (the actual fit of the day) Outfit 1: Tweed jacket: secondhand Express via Goodwill Velvet burgundy qipao: secondhand 90s vintage via my mom’s closet Black plaid tights: Target (same as issue 7) Spectator T-strap heels: BAIT Footwear Ione Outfit 2: Mustard turtleneck: Kotn (same as issue 6) Tweed jacket: secondhand Express via Goodwill Plaid mini dress: secondhand ModCloth Scholastic Classic Collared Babydoll Dress via Poshmark Black plaid tights: Target (same as issue 7) Spectator T-strap heels: BAIT Footwear Ione I wore outfit 1 to a Fast-a-Thon and iftar that my school’s Muslim Student Association held for the campus community, which overlapped a bit with pub night. The org encouraged cultural dress, so of course I was going to wear a qipao! I originally wanted to wear a different one (a white silk one), but this burgundy velvet qipao was just what I had at school. This particular qipao is yet another plunder from my mom's closet, and it seems to be vintage 90s based on the shift silhouette and shoulder pads. When I first got it, imagine my shock when I looked at the tag and discovered it was from some rando Western brand. I forgot how absolutely popular cultural appropriation of East Asian culture was in 90s and 2000s fashion (ex: in the 2003 classic romcom How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, one of the first scenes randomly has a white woman in a qipao). To give the dress more shape and more of that typical (modern-day) qipao silhouette, I used safety pins to pin the waist smaller. I probably spent probably an hour -- a very painful one at that -- to get the silhouette to how I wanted. Outfit 2 was my "real" outfit of the day. This was only my second time wearing this tweed jacket even though I thrifted it from Goodwill over a year ago; I'm still trying to figure out how to incorporate it into more outfits, but I do really like it with this particular knee-length dress. The dress itself is the Modcloth Scholastic Classic Collared Babydoll Dress; they first released it in fall 2021 in the red color that I have, and they released it again in fall 2022 in green. Like with issue 7's babydoll dress, the babydoll silhouette is less restrictive at the waist, making it super comfortable. It was a bit of a journey to eventually obtain this dress. When I initially saw the red one in an Instagram ad in 2021, I *instantly* fell in love -- the general 1960s academia vibes, the super cute trimmed collar, the gold button details, everything. But new on the Modcloth website, it was like $85. Despite how absolutely adorable it was, that didn’t seem worth it to me for a polyester Modcloth dress, so I hoped for a sale. Soon after first seeing it, a creator I followed (the one who was in the original ad I saw!) actually listed hers for sale on Depop ... but it sold before I got around to buying it. Then by the time I sucked it up and sort of coaxed myself into buying it new off the Modcloth website for the >$80, it had already sold out in my size. Flash forward to over a year later at the very end of 2022, I happened to see it on Poshmark in my size!!!! The seller had listed it *new with tags* for $25, and they ended up accepting my offer of $22. I consider myself having spent "$0" since I used my Poshmark selling credits to pay for it. So, ultimately a happy ending! I feel super, super lucky to have found it. Issue 11: April 11 (Maisie Peters + Fraternity Picture Day)Potato screenshots from the Reel of outfit #1, the Maisie Peters-inspired look (left) and outfit #2, my "real" outfit for the day (right) Outfit 1: Orange bralette: Aerie Faux leather bustier thing: Aliexpress ope Black suede pants: secondhand probably 90s/2000s vintage unearthed from my sister’s closet Black faux reptile print heeled loafers: BAIT Footwear Cici loafers Outfit 2: Pale apricot ribbed turtleneck: Asos (same as issues 4 and 5) Bishop sleeve pussybow tie burgundy satin blouse: Unique Vintage Lena blouse Brown plaid wide leg trousers: secondhand vintage 80s via Depop Black faux reptile print heeled loafers: BAIT Footwear Cici loafers Outfit 1 was for our TikTok of the night, "dress as your top artist." My top Spotify artist of all time is LOML Maisie Peters, so I drew inspiration from some of her tour outfits in particular. One of her go-to outfit formulas is a fitted (often sleeveless or baby tee) crop top + a funky, non-slim high-rise bottom + black chunky platform heeled shoes. In terms of colors, she usually wears black, white (on top especially), or a very bold, saturated color like bubblegum pink. I was mostly inspired by a couple of her funky black pants (example, example) -- in particular, her leather pants. I don't have any leather bottoms, so I wore faux suede bottoms instead; I incorporated the leather texture via a faux leather bustier. I didn't feel like bringing a separate pair of shoes just for the TikTok, so I just wore the black faux leather heeled loafers that I was wearing for the day; the color + slightly chunky silhouette still went well with Maisie's style. On the opposite end of the spectrum, outfit 2 was for my pharmacy fraternity's photo composite, so I needed to wear something that sufficiently fit the "business professional" dress code and also felt like a very Me outfit for a picture that will hang on campus for years to come. The fraternity's colors are gold and wine red, so I honored that with the burgundy satin of the blouse. This particular blouse also has very voluminous bishop sleeves and a pussybow tie, both of which are elements that just bring me joy and are fun and vintage. For part of pub night, however, I actually took off the blouse and just wore the mock neck because I got very warm through the night, especially after pub night when I was studying for an exam in the office till about ~7 AM. The composite photo only was from the shoulders up, so it wasn't necessary to have professional-looking bottoms and shoes. However, when you're engaging in fashion as a hobby and not just an obligation, it's still fun to go all out for a particular vibe rather than half-ass it. I'm surprised that this is the first pub night that I wore my brown plaid wide leg trousers as these are probably my #1 most worn pair of bottoms. Funny little tangent, but for composite photo day last year, I actually forgot about it when I was getting dressed that morning. Fortunately, like I said earlier, the good thing about my particular personal style is that I tend to look fairly professional on any given day, so I was still appropriately dressed. Issue 12: April 18 (Fall Academia in Spring)Potato screenshot from the Reel Ribbed rust orange turtleneck: Kotn Tie-neck rust orange jacquard dress: Target Ivory pointelle knee-high socks: Sock Dreams Brown spectator Oxfords: secondhand Cole Haan via Depop I call this rust orange dress THE Target DressTM; all others in my closet that follow are simply derivative. I hadn't worn The Target DressTM in a long time, so I wanted to pull it out before it got too warm to wear. It's the same dress I had on when I did a very fall-toned makeup look and some rando on campus yelled, "Ugh, it's only SEPTEMBER" at me, haha. This is another babydoll dress with a loose waist, so, yet again, it's incredibly comfortable. It was cold enough to warrant tights, but I wanted to ~switch it up~ a little with these knee-high socks instead. Combined with the Oxfords, I feel it gave an overall very collegiate/academia vibe which, famously, I love. This was my first time wearing these brown Oxfords as I had just gotten them at the beginning of March though I had been on the hunt for a pair of dark brown spectator Oxfords for about a year. I realized last year that since I wear my ivory + tan pair all the time, it only made sense to get a darker version, too. TakeawaysLayering
99% of my outfits in the fall/winter/early spring include a turtleneck base layer. As a chronically cold person, this is absolutely essential for me. Before I got into fashion, I didn't really understand base layering just as a general concept, so I would be wearing a jacket (like my puffer jacket that's meant for the outdoors) 24/7 during the winter, even when inside. With my current day layering knowledge, I don't have to do that anymore! It's legitimately improved my quality of life. While the turtleneck is the layering piece you can see, what you don't see underneath is even more layers! I'm also wearing a base layer tee (Uniqlo Heattech/similar item) in all of my outfits. And sometimes, there's a fitted tank top or T-shirt under that -- plus a slip if the outfit calls for it. Professionalism In the original post on Ethan’s blog, something Spencer said about his style that resonated with me is that he needs to be a chameleon when it comes to formality: professional enough to be appropriate around The AuthoritiesTM, yet not so professional that he’d be out of place among most people. I'm lucky that the style I happen to like just so coincidentally aligns with that. For me in particular, it helps me look more like my age to be more intentionally styled (though I still get mistaken for a freshman regardless lol). Granted, at college in the Midwest, it's honestly not too big of a deal; we're not really famous for our outstanding style, haha. And because my school is quite small, it's a lot easier for people to get to know each other as people rather than solely relying on snap judgments on fashion, which I appreciate. However, there's also an element of confidence -- if you internally *feel* put together and confident and “professional” in your outfit, then other people can sense that confidence, regardless of what your actual style is. An Occasion When I started writing this blog post, I thought these were all going to be very standard-issue (haha) outfits for me. While that's true in terms of big-picture style, I realized that pub night is still a bit of an ~occasion~ for me. A good chunk of my pub night outfits came about because I wanted to wear something I hadn't worn in a while. On the other hand, I only wore my style uniform a quarter of the time (and even then, in rarer variations), and my most worn pieces hardly made an appearance -- if they made an appearance at all. That just goes to show that you don't need some once-in-a-blue-moon special event to have fun with your wardrobe; even something that happens weekly like pub night is a good enough excuse to do something different. Don’t wait around for special occasions to happen. Your life is special, so make everyday life an occasion!
