5/29/2023 0 Comments 8 Makeup & Fashion Creators to Follow this Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month (and Also Every Month Ever because They’re Cool)
As the best month of the year (Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month, of course) comes to a close, I want to highlight some awesome Asian creators in the makeup + fashion spaces that I personally follow and enjoy. Most grew up and live in the United States, but they come from and live in a variety of countries across the world.
Of course, this is absolutely a non-exhaustive list, and there are SO many other people I could feature. It was really tough to narrow it down! I ended up settling on 8 because 8 is a lucky number in Chinese culture, so I guess it's fitting haha? The first 4 are beauty accounts, and the latter 4 are fashion accounts. Otherwise, this list is ordered arbitrarily because all these people are equally fabulous. For each creator, I give:
Look out for the accompanying Instagram Reel! @lil_jo__ (mixed-race chinese)
WHAT TO EXPECT: sparkly makeup looks, makeup panning and flatlays/photography
WHY I LIKE HER: I feel that Jo and I are kindred souls in makeup -- usually no foundation/concealer to let our natural skin textures shine, ~sparkly~ and colorful eyeshadow looks, a bright inner corner shimmer, lots of panning progress on our Colourpop Super Shock blushes in Drop of a Hat ... There's so much! Jo loves makeup and beauty, but she also discourages the hyperconsumerism that can be so rampant within our community. Though she enjoys her new products, she doesn't neglect to share the panning progress of her old loves. WHERE TO FIND HER: Instagram (@lil_jo__) @deerestdiary.makeup (vietnamese)
WHAT TO EXPECT: dimensional + colorful creative eyeshadow looks, eyeshadow pictorials
WHY I LIKE THEM: Is it possible to bathe in someone's makeup? Thea's looks are simply ethereal. Their account is one part step-by-step tutorials on their hooded eyes, one part eye closeups. A fellow lover of gorgeous, shifty shadows (indie and non-indie alike), their eyeshadow looks are just *chef's kiss*: so well blended, so SPORKLY!! They also rock inner corner liner, graphic liner (using both water-activated liners and aforementioned shifty shadows), and a fair share of rhinestones. Thea lives in the EU, so they created a resource on their blog of makeup brands accessible in the EU since most beauty content tends to be very US-centered. Their blog also contains swatches and reviews for indie makeup. WHERE TO FIND THEM: Instagram (@deerestdiary.makeup), TikTok (@deerestdiary.makeup), blog (deerestdiarymakeup.wordpress.com) @noopur_makeup (indian)
WHAT TO EXPECT: indie eyeshadow features/swatches and looks
WHY I LIKE HER: Before I followed Noopur, I kept on seeing her posts in my explore page, and every time, I would instantly recognize her. Her makeup style is quite simple, but that only serves to really showcase the sparkly (how many times can I say "sparkly" in one blog post lol) indie shadows she uses all over her plentiful lid space; her natural, dewy base and nude lips serve to do the same. Other than her makeup looks, Noopur also shares Reels featuring and swatching indie eyeshadows both new and old, and she posts indie shadow comparisons of similar-looking shades across brands. WHERE TO FIND HER: Instagram (@noopur_makeup), Linktree with affiliate codes (linktr.ee/noopur_makeup) @tesschung (taiwanese)
WHAT TO EXPECT: colorful and creative intensely sparkly eyeshadow looks, eyeshadow video tutorials
WHY I LIKE HER: Say it with me again, kids: shifty, sparkly eyeshadows!!! I'm sorry for being so predictable, but loving sporkles is NOT a crime. Tess's eye looks are ESPECIALLY glittery, using a mix of indie, drugstore, and high-end makeup -- accompanied with, of course, a glowy blooshed base and lips. Her eyeshadow placement also tends to be very creative, oftentimes doing full-shimmer or highly shimmer-centric looks. Even when Tess does incorporate matte shadows, it's rarely ever in the traditional "light to dark matte gradient in the orbital bone" sort of way. As a fellow hooded eyelids/shallow eye socket girlie, I love how she consistently -- and skillfully -- breaks the makeup "rule" of only being allowed to put mattes in your orbital bone in order to make your eyes look as big as possible. WHERE TO FIND HER: Instagram (@tesschung), TikTok (@tesschung), YouTube (@TessChung) @ethanmwong (Filipino + Chinese)
WHAT TO EXPECT: menswear (think suits in a cool vintage way), personal style commentary, outfit checks of both himself and his friends
WHY I LIKE HIM: I found Ethan via his WAYWT posts on r/malefashionadvice, and I was instantly enamored with his style -- so much so that I trawled his Reddit account to find his Instagram (in a non-creepy, non-stalker way). I've often told friends that if I was a guy, I'd probably dress like him. The pull of the high rise, wide leg trouser and the vintage inspiration transcends any and all boundaries. I also love his commentary and outlook on personal style. I find that so much fashion content leans toward specific products, but, on his blog especially, he more so talks about the philosophy surrounding and cultural lens for style. I wish so badly there was more content like that out there, but his blog posts are long enough to count for like 3 different creators lol. â WHERE TO FIND HIM: Instagram (@ethanmwong), TikTok (@ethanmwong), blog (alittlebitofrest.com), co-hosted podcast (Style and Direction) @mgetsdressed (Filipino + Chinese)
WHAT TO EXPECT: in-depth outfit analyses reflecting her evolving lifestyle, crochet projects
WHY I LIKE HER: Similarly to why I like Ethan, I love the way that Margaret thinks about fashion; she describes what she does as "[writing] about style as a verb." Her look has drastically changed through the years (nowadays, Margaret's style leans towards hippie crunchy/granola casual with a touch of pastel whimsy), and we don't really dress all too similarly at this point. Still, I find her approach to style incredibly enlightening. I credit her with such epiphanies such as the importance of head styling, and the absolutely brilliant [extra/low-key] <--> [informal/formal] wardrobe compass/style philosophy. âMargaret is super intentional about her look, and she doesn't hesitate to maintain a well-curated wardrobe. She's also amazing at breaking down and verbalizing each aspect of her outfit, whether it's color, silhouette, texture, general "genre(s)" of aesthetic, or occasion/lifestyle (e.g. WFH vs. creative office vs. hiking vs. indoor rock climbing, etc.). While she doesn't post her daily outfit recaps on her feed anymore (she mainly posts on her story), her IG is still a treasure trove of OOTD walkthroughs. She also doesn't post on her blog anymore, but again, it's an amazing resource to refer back to for content about how to think about fashion. WHERE TO FIND HER: Instagram (@mgetsdressed), Pinterest, new blog (mgetsdressed.com), old blog AKA casualties of her platform migration (mgetsdressed.com/old-blog), Poshmark (@mgetsdressed) @ap_archives (Indian)
WHAT TO EXPECT: me-made wardrobe projects and thrift flips
WHY I LIKE HER: Arti was another person I first saw on Reddit and followed to Instagram. As she describes herself, she is a "certified craft heaux." A proponent of sustainable fashion and generally critical of overconsumption, she sews, crochets, and knits many of her own clothing pieces. Her style leans towards more clean and minimal with lots of fitted crop tops, high rise + wide leg trousers, mini skirts, and fit-and-flare dress silhouettes. Alongside sharing the actual finished clothing pieces themselves, she also shares details about the pattern, the material, and her experience with the actual making process (particularly any alterations she made to the pattern to accommodate her 5'0" height and particular body proportions). No gatekeeping here! WHERE TO FIND HER: Instagram (@ap_archives) @definitely_not_kayleeeeee (vietnamese)
WHAT TO EXPECT: cute, colorful outfits with creative layering and pattern mixing (primarily Reels)
WHY I LIKE HER: I don't know how to categorize Dinh's aesthetic other than generally adorable and joyous. Ever fun, she wears lots of chunky platform shoes, funky + bright color combos that I would never think to put together, and voluminous puff sleeves. There's a hint of vintage inspiration and proportions -- perhaps 90s? Most notably, Dinh is very skillful at layering, which her GRWM Reels readily showcase. She's a fellow proponent of turtlenecks under everything, but she also layers tons of jewelry/accessories that really elevate her looks, 3+ tops/bralettes at once, and contrasting patterns. WHERE TO FIND HER: Instagram (@definitely_not_kayleeeeee) Honorable mentions & wrap-up
Given I already featured these people in-depth in my Mutually Creative series on my blog, it didn't feel fair to write about them again in this compilation. However, I would be absolutely remiss if I didn't include them in some way here today:
I didn't mean for my Mutually Creative series to be so #VeryAsian (every single feature thus far has some degree of Asian heritage), but it's really how I realistically engage with Instagram -- I really just happen to follow a good amount of Asian creators! And frankly, far, far beyond the borders of APAHM, I feel so honored to exist as "peers" alongside every single one of them on this silly little app <3â

about @glowyminoI have dry skin and very dry and textured lips. I also have a medium-light skintone (somewhere in the realm of NC25-30) with strong warm yellow/olive undertones. I have a tendency to prefer a glowy, lightweight base and color cosmetics in shades of a warm undertone. Read more about me in the about page! Archives
