6/7/2022 0 Comments Mutually Creative: @tastefulcringe — Embracing “Ugly” Makeup, Makeup as Art, and Feminism/Reconciling Internalized Beauty StandardsIn this new series, I interview one of my internet mutuals about their makeup, fashion, or whatever cool, creative thing it is that they do. While some of them may consider themselves to be "influencers," many of them are everyday people who happen to have a skill and a hobbyw ith a platform. However they self-identify, let's dig a little deeper into their creativity and style in "Mutually Creative."
Years ago, after I stumbled upon one of her makeup posts on Reddit, @tastefulcringe on Instagram was the very first non-YouTuber makeup account I ever followed on IG. Thus, it made perfect sense to feature her as the inaugural mutual in this new series "Mutually Creative." I owe to her my love for heavy blush -- 80s-inspired blush draping in particular -- that I derived from her signature style, and I was first drawn (haha) to faux freckles because of her.
Tastefulcringe can often be caught in colorful editorial looks, tagging her posts with #uglymakeuprevolution, and posting on her story either a complete shitpost or something very serious and political about the state of society. I sat (virtually) with her to talk about her journey into creative makeup, makeup as an art form, and how we (as feminists who have a lot of beef with the world) attempt to deal when our makeup loves are rooted in gendered beauty standards.
GM: What are your makeup essentials -- either specific products or just general categories or anything?
TC: A freckle pen is my favorite thing. I feel like it pulls it together for me. I really like these ... brow tint pens*; they're little markers, but I use them for freckles, and they're my new favorite thing. So definitely that, and a nice color palette** -- something with the basic primary colors and some bold colors. I use this thing a lot because it's so easy, and you can mix colors together. @tastefulcringe recs: *Milani Weekend Brow Pen for faux freckles ($9) **Profusion Spectrum eyeshadow palette ($6)
"I like to sort of pride myself on not prescribing to traditional femininity, but I mean, I do -- I do. That's reality ... It's just so hard to be the perfect feminist who has completely unpacked all of their stuff and has rooted out all of their little internal teachings of society."
And, I feel conflicted because I think that there are elements of that "no makeup radical feminism" that ... I get it.
Because it's like, if I unpack some of my own internalized misogyny ... even if this is how I prefer to be presented, this makes me feel good and safe, and this makes me feel like myself, I also think that underneath that, I want to be perceived a certain way, and I wanna be perceived in a way that isn't going to be reacted to super negatively by society. Like going out, like when I go to the grocery store a lot of times when I'm wearing ... the wilder makeup, it does upset me when people react negatively to it, and so then I have to unpack why that bothers me. So I don't know if I can really answer that question 'cause I don't know. I'm still kind of struggling with [it]. It's just so hard to be the perfect feminist who has completely unpacked all of their stuff and has rooted out all of their little internal teachings of society. But I think the first step is just acknowledging that, and just being honest with myself about it ... I'm still not 100% comfortable with myself in my purest, basest form, and it's just a process I'm still working on.
GM: What misconceptions about makeup do you wish you could dispel?
TC: My gut instinct is to say that women and people don't wear makeup to be [attractive to] men, and it's not for anyone; it's not for the male gaze, as we said. But I think, to a certain degree, I don't know how accurate that is. Ooh ... skin, this is a thing that I've struggled with for so long is skin and having clear skin and how when I was growing up, I felt like makeup [was] used as a tool to cover my acne and make me look like a "normal" person because I didn't feel like a normal person with acne. And I think that now, in my age, I think that people should see makeup as not just that. It doesn't just have to be this insecurity cover, that it can also be used as a tool for art. "[Makeup] doesn't just have to be this insecurity cover ... it can also be used as a tool for art. The skin is such a cool recyclable canvas."

about @glowyminoI have dry skin and very dry and textured lips. I also have a medium-light skintone (somewhere in the realm of NC25-30) with strong warm yellow/olive undertones. I have a tendency to prefer a glowy, lightweight base and color cosmetics in shades of a warm undertone. Read more about me in the about page! Archives
